How to Make Money With Print on Demand in 2024

Print on Demand is a very popular business model in the world of eCommerce.

You have probably wanted to jump in on the action which is probably why you are here. In this article, I want to talk about whether this is a good way to make money and give you a couple of tips along the way.

By the end of this page, you should hopefully know whether this form of dropshipping model is right for you.

What is Print on Demand?

Print on Demand is a form of dropshipping.

With Print on Demand, you will be designing products. In reality, you will be designing an image that fits onto ready-made products. Keep in mind you can also get others to design the product for you or select pre-made designs. More on that later.

Here's How it Works:

When somebody orders one of the products you have designed, the manufacturer will print it off and ship it out. How you get paid will be dependent on the print on demand company that you work with.

Some will pay you a commission, while some will require you to pay them before they ship out the item. You just collect the profit from it.

Choose a Niche You are Passionate About

As with all business models, the only way you are going to make money with print on demand is if you are actually passionate about it.

I cannot see somebody making tons of cash in a niche that they have no love for.  It will be very easy to lose motivation, and it can be difficult to spot new market opportunities.

Even within the print on demand business model, you still need to be passionate about the niche you are entering into. For example; you probably wouldn't want to have products designed for certain hobbies if you have no interest in that hobby. It would be just way too difficult to market the products.

However, don't let this deter you if you find a market that is in demand. If you find something that you know can work, it might be worth exploring. From experience, it's just easier to work with something you are interested in.

How to Create Artwork

To be successful with print on demand, then you will need some quality artwork. There are several ways that you can obtain something that is going to look reasonably good.

If you are particularly talented, then you can always make your own designs. Learning how to use Photoshop can go a long way here. If you see yourself as a creative visionary, but you do not have the skills to put that into practice, then you may want to use a platform such as Canva.

This platform is loaded with templates and is drag and drop. It is dead simple to make something good.

Alternatively, you can look into one of the many freelancing platforms out there. UpWork and Fiverr should score you some affordable artwork. There are plenty of quality designers out there that will charge incredibly low prices.

The only way to be successful and make money with print on demand is to invest in quality artwork. You want something that will catch the attention of your website visitors. Good designs encourage them to spend money.

Successful Print on Demand Stores

Just to prove that you can make money with print on demand, here are a couple of stores that have been doing exactly that.

While I cannot guarantee you will be making as much money as these sites, I can tell you that if you are willing to put the effort in, you will likely make something:

StomaStoma

This is one of my favorite print on demand stores, because it shows that people can make serious money with their talents. The team behind StomaStoma produce all of their own artwork. They focus on just a couple of specific products too, mainly to market them a little bit easier.

StomaStoma also has a brilliant business model that I believe you could follow. They work heavily with social media and influencer marketing, which can help to keep costs a bit lower.

IconSpeak

This is a print on demand store that was heavily featured in the media at one point, leading to several orders per minute.

While they probably do not generate that sort of turnover now, IconSpeak has some beautiful designs that do sell incredibly well. I love the design of their site too.

Classic Dad

Classic Dad shows just how popular even the smallest of niches can be.

As the name suggests, this site is dedicated to dad-focused apparel but leans heavily on memes. You need to check this one out.

Pros & Cons of Starting a Print on Demand Store

Now, this is the point where I start to dive into the pros and cons of print on demand stores. This way, you will know whether it is the right business model for you.

Pros
  • Obviously, the major pro of dropshipping print on demand items is that you have no initial expenditure for your stock. Your only expense will be any designs you purchase, but this is a one time expense. You won't pay for any stock until it has sold, which keeps entry expenses quite low.
  • People love to purchase apparel too, so if you can put together a quality website, it shouldn't be too hard to market and sell your products. Social media marketing and influencer marketing works here, because it makes it a little bit easier to show a visual representation of your product.
  • There are a ton of products that print on demand too. Sure, we all know about t-shirts and hats, but what about pens? What about cellphone cases? What about frisbees? There are just so many different products available, that it won't be difficult to find some that you really want to sell.
Cons
  • The biggest downside is that the market is quite crowded. It isn't crowded to the point where you may struggle to find a niche that you can enter, but it will take a little while.
  • The profit margins can be quite slim on some products too, which means that you will need to sell a lot of product if you want to turn this business into a serious one.
  • Designs can get expensive if you are outsourcing them, so there may be some trial and error before finding a product that takes off.

Conclusion

Print on Demand is a great way to make money online. It can be difficult to break into, but if you have passion for this business, you could make a sizeable income from it.

All the research has been done on what sells. The artwork has also been created so you don't need to design anything. You simply just choose what designs you want and what products and upload them to your store.

We are in Q4 right now which will be the biggest quarter for online sales. It's time to grab that piece of the pie worth billions of dollars!
